Dr. Reifsnider is currently Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Director of the EFRC HeteroFoam Center, and Director of the Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Center of Excellence at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC. In April, 2012, Dr. Reifsnider was awarded the Russell Award for Science, Mathematics and Engineering from the University of South Carolina. He has 40 years of teaching and research experience and held the Pratt & Whitney Chair at the University of Connecticut. He has taught a wide range of courses in mechanics and materials. His research interests include durability, damage tolerance, and strength-life relationships in material systems, performance and life prognosis, aging, material state changes, long term behavior, and fuel cell science and engineering. Dr. Reifsnider is one of the world's pre-eminent fuel cell materials researchers and is leading South Carolina's fuel-cell initiative and the state's effort to develop fuel cells for applications in society.
He has published widely in scholarly journals, conference proceedings, etc. (over 200 refereed publications) and has given talks, seminars and short courses (e.g. on fuel cells) worldwide. Included among his various professional activities and awards is Editor in Chief of the International Journal of Fatigue (1999-2008), Associate Editor of the ASME Journal of Fuel Cell Science and Technology (2004-present), and an elected member of the prestigious National Academy of Engineering and is also a member of the Air Force Science Advisory Board. .
